Why are Tires Black?
Have you noticed that almost tires on Car /ATV / Motorcycle are black ? Some newbies or hip hop artists would want some orange tires, or lime green ones, or baby blue for their vehicle . But it’s a little hard to find.So why are tires black ? Is there a specific reason for this color selection, or is it simply a coincidence?
Regular automobile tires are black because one of the key ingredients in rubber tire compound is carbon black, which makes tires durable. Carbon black is tiny dust-like particles of jet black carbon.Actually Carbon Black is not added as a coloring agent,it is a filler.
1.Carbon Black increases the damping properties of rubber, thus transferring less shock loads to the automobile.
2.Carbon Black is a good conductor of heat and would help conduct heat away from the surface with contact to the road and help maintain a healthy tire temperature. An added bonus is that addition of carbon black increases the coefficient of friction with the road surface thus making it safer to drive.
3.In addiction to the carbon black catches the sunlight's ultraviolet rays, would otherwise quickly degrade the tire, and turns those rays into heat, easily dispersed on the road. And it makes your tires black.Tires stay black for a long time. As they age, after many years of bombardment with ultraviolet rays, they turn a bit brown. Time for some new tires.
All in all, being black is the result of the manufacturer’s attempts to extend the life of their automotive products. You could have any color of tire you'd like, some manufacturers have tried, but they were not a commercial success, as no other readily-available filler has been found with the combination of beneficial properties seen in carbon black. Also ,there are practical considerations:colored tires would be harder to keep clean and might tend to clash with the color and style of the car itself while black goes with everything.Another reason is that carbon is essentially free, and the replacements less .Hence, black is the preferred color for tires, so they are made in that color, even if one could make an equal in a different color.
